Minister Bruton announces appointment of Ms Geraldine Gleeson and Mr. Brendan O’Leary as Caranua (Residential Institutions Statutory Fund) Appeals Officers with effect from 15th May 2017.
Ms. Gleeson and Mr. O’Leary will succeed Mr. Pat Whelan who had stepped down when his term of office came to an end on 30th April 2017.
The Residential Institutions Statutory Fund, which uses the service name Caranua, was established under the Residential Institutions Statutory Fund Act 2012 to oversee the use of up to €110 million in cash contributions pledged by religious congregations to support the needs of survivors of residential institutional child abuse.
Decisions made by a Caranua Decision Maker can be appealed to the independent Caranua Appeals Officers appointed by the Minister for Education and Skills.
These decisions include:
- a decision on an application made by an eligible former residents for assistance; and
- a decision that a person is not a former resident eligible to apply under the scheme.
